"Marlborough Has Left for the War", Art Deco Vase by Lallemant, Folk Song Theme
About the Item
At once sophisticated and charming, this rare Art Deco vase by Robert Lallemant uses images and music to illustrate the classic French folk song -- "Malbrough s'en va-t-en guerre" (or Marlborough has left for the war). Two sides of the vase depict the Duke of Marlborough on his spotted horse, his soldiers in the distance, all in rich variations of deep red and blue, while the other two sides depict bars of music for the song. The song refers to a moment in the Spanish War of Succession when Marlborough's wife, awaiting his return from battle, was given false news of her husband's death. Lallemant was known for his substantial molded pieces in geometric forms, sometimes cubes and hard-edged forms stacked upon each other, but each piece is uniquely glazed and decorated. The piece is signed on the bottom.
