William Baron Art Pottery Sgraffito Glazed Fish Vase

About the Item

A delightful Devon art pottery vase decorated in sgraffito with a fish swimming amidst weed made in Barnstaple by renowned artist William Leonard Baron (British, 1863-1937) dating from around 1895. William Baron studied at Lambeth School of Art and was trained as a modeller, designer and potter. In the 1870’s he joined Doulton Lambeth leaving there in the early 1880’s to move to Barnstaple and work for Charles Brannam. In 1893 he branched out and started his own pottery. This small and finely potted vase is typical of the quality and style of Baron’s work with a wide round body and wide slightly flared funnel top with a round top rim with three pinched designs to the edge. The vase is decorated with a fish swimming amidst weed and is hand coloured in tones of brown, blue and green sgraffito applied on a lighter stipple ground. The vase has an incised signature mark to the base and is numbered 61. Provenance: acquired in the British art market. In good condition.
