Grouping of Rare Danish Studio Ceramics by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen
About the Item
NOTES: Dimensions provided refer to the tallest piece (pitcher). Price listed is per set of (4).
Comprised of a pitcher, petal-shaped bowl, and two-bud vases - this fabulous grouping of ceramics by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen & Son (MA&S) features bold geometric and animalistic motifs - incised and hand-painted with thick glaze in tones of rust, light green, and sandy beige - over a semi-matte black ground. Three graduated birds and a large owl - depicted on the pitcher and bowl, respectively - are a prime example of Starck's unique stylized figure work, which draws from traditional Scandinavian folk art and fairy tale imagery. Meanwhile, the two vases showcase some of Starck's more abstract work, with tribal-inspired geometric motifs and unique silhouettes - including bulbous forms and an interesting tulip-like split mouth, as seen on the larger vase. Through the skillful implementation of a dark and unexpected color palette, Starck skillfully avoids the traps set by her various influences, producing art that is neither twee or derivative - but rather: bold, graphic, and quintessentially Mid-Century Modern.
With works represented in museums across Scandinavian, German-born Marianne Starck (1938-2007) is one of Denmark's most celebrated and well-known ceramic designers.
