Large Goldscheider Art Deco Odalisque 'Aida' by Josef Lorenzl, Around 1925
About the Item
Very exceptional decorated Goldscheider Art Deco ceramic figure of the 1920's:
Depiction of a standing lady proudly looking to the side in oriental garb, wrapped in a large blue-green cloth reaching to the ground, decorated on the front with stylized floral and leaf pattern decorated with bright colors and a white bird and, held tightly by a headdress with an incorporated snake's head, covers her hair, underneath she wears midnight blue harem pants held by a belt of black and white jagged ribbons, along with a skimpy bustier draped with red chains.
On black stepped oval base.
The model was inspired by the famous opera 'Aida' by Giuseppe Verdi, which tells the fate of the odalisque Aida, an Ethiopian king's daughter taken hostage.
Designed by Josef LORENZL (1892 - 1950), was an Austrian sculptor and ceramic modeler. His bronze statuettes often show graceful dancers with long legs and closed eyes. Lorenzl designed numerous ceramics for Friedrich Goldscheider and Keramos and was one of the most popular artists of Art Deco.
