Mason's Ironstone Tall Vase in Blue Hawthorne Pattern Rare Shape, circa 1830
About the Item
This is an ironstone tall Vase in the blue Hawthorne and fence and bowl pattern, made by Mason's Ironstone of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, during the first half of the 19th century, circa 1825-1835.
The vase has a fairly rare shape, with a hexagonal body raised on a pedastal foot with an everted rim with two fine folded loop side handles terminating in a mask head either side of the neck. The vase may have had a lid originally.
The main central section of the vase has two different chinoiserie influenced patterns on opposite sides; one the Blue Hawthorne pattern and the other the fence and bowl pattern surrounded by very colorful, Imari style patterns on the other sides, all vividly hand painted with typical bold enamels of different colors. This vase has very good hand gilded detail. The patterns are all illustrated in the book "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns", published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. A similar jardinière on Stand is illustrated on Page 180 of Geoffrey Godden's reference book: Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares, published by the Antique Collectors' Club.
There is a Mason's printed round crown mark to the base, dating this piece to circa 1830.
Overall a rare shape, very decorative, early Mason's Ironstone vase, nearly 200 years old.
