Set of SIX Mason's Dinner Plates Ashworth's Ironstone Large, Circa 1865
About the Item
These are a beautiful set of SIX Large Dinner Plates by Mason's ironstone made during the mid-19th century, when Mason's was owned by Ashworth Brothers, circa 1865.
These Dinner Plates are well potted and large with a diameter of over 10 inches, about ~26.3 cm.
The plates have a detailed Chinoiserie pattern depicting a pagoda lakeside scene with various buildings and trees with boats on the water and various border designs. The pattern would have been printed onto each plate and then hand painted in various bold colors including cobalt blue and a burnt orange, with additional gilt highlighting. This pattern is a variant on Mason's "Pekin Japan" Chinoiserie pattern illustrated on Page 86 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns" published by The Mason's Collectors' Club.
All six plates have a puce printed mark to the reverse; Real Ironstone China, with a Mason's crown above and a hand pattern number, 143 in red below. This mark is a recorded Mason's / Ashworth's mark and is shown on Page 192 of Godden's Guide to Ironstone, Stone and Granite Wears, published by The Antique Collectors' club.
In summary, a very decorative set of Dinner Plates from the mid 19th Century of Victorian England.
