Glyn Colledge Mid-Century Floral Pattern Denby Art Pottery Jug
About the Item
A stylish mid-century art pottery Denby handled jug hand painted with stylized floral designs by renowned English ceramist Glyn Colledge (British, 1922-2000).
Glyn Colledge began working at Denby while also studying at Burslem School of Art under Gordon Forsyth. He served in the RAF during WWII and returned to the pottery after the war to resume his career as a designer. Colledge was provided with his own studio at the pottery and pieces were signed by him so that they would be classed as studio pottery and not be subject to some of the high taxes at the time.
This stoneware jug is a very fine example of the work of Glyn Colledge standing raised on a narrow round foot with a round bulbous shaped body, slender funnel shape neck and wide shaped top with pinched pouring spout. The jug has a strap loop handle molded in relief with acorns. The body of the jug is hand painted with trailing leaf patterns in an abstract design in colored enamels on a white ground and with painted banding and leaf patterns to the neck and similar patterning around the lower body. The jug has a green signature mark to the base along with printed MADE IN ENGLAND mark.
Provenance: acquired in the British art market.
A fine example in good condition.
