Large Georgian Mason's Ironstone Rare Jug or Pitcher Basket Japan Ptn, Ca 1818
About the Item
This is a very good, early, large and very rare Mason's Ironstone Jug or Pitcher in the Basket Japan pattern, made in the English, late Georgian period, circa 1815-1820.
This jug has a very rare shape and is particularly decorative, being a much larger size than we normally see.
The jug has an octagonal shape with a curling snake or monkey head loop handle, with the animal head acting as a thumb rest. It also has a rare rectangular pouring spout. It is well decorated in the distinctive "Basket Japan" pattern, which is one of Mason's well known chinoiserie patterns, using bold hand painted enamels of cobalt blue, green and burnt orange all in various shades and possibly over a light printed outline. This pattern is illustrated on Page 103 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-circa 1848" as published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The jug shape ( without the handle) is illustrated on on page 127 in the book: Mason's China & the Ironstone Wares by Geoffrey Gooden, published by the antique collectors' club.
This jug has been marked to the base with Mason's earliest recorded impressed printed crown marks with wide spaced MASONS above the crown with only the "N" of MASONS now visible, the rest of the printed mark having worn away. This is a very early piece dating to within the first 7 years of Mason's Ironstone production which only started in 1813.
This piece has the free flowing hand painted style only seen on the early pieces.
Overall a good very rare, large, very decorative and useful Georgian piece of Mason's Ironstone.
