Seal, I Still Hope, Derby Porcelain Works, circa 1760
About the Item
A delightul porcelain seal, depicting a young lady, seated on a mound. It is painted with the motto J'ESPRE ENCORE, or I Still Hope. No doubt this was intended as a gift, to be given by a young man to his sweetheart as a token of his love.
The base is mounted with a finely carved semi-precious stone, depcting a bearded gentleman in a helmet; perhaps one of the Olympian Gods.
In addition to numerous legal and official purposes, seals were also used for personal purposes, such as signing letters, marking books and other possessions. They were often given as gifts and were used to indicate that something belonged to a particular person.
It's important to note that in the 18th century the use of seal wasn't only a practical matter but also a social and status matter, having a seal or having an elaborate or personalized seal, indicated one's social and economic position.
