1890's French Neoclassic Repoussé Sterling Silver Serving Meat Fork and Knife

About the Item

The Neoclassical style, originating in the late 18th century, was marked by a return to classical principles of order, symmetry, and simplicity, inspired by ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture. This serving fork exhibits restrained ornamentation and clean lines, reflecting the refined and balanced aesthetic of the Neoclassical era. By using Repoussé , which involves shaping or decorating a malleable metal, like silver, by hammering it from the back to create a raised design on the front of this set. This method enables craftsmen to achieve intricate details and depth in the decorative patterns on the handles. Repoussé is often used to create figures, animals, flowers, foliage, scrolls, and many other decorative forms. This technique for creating relief ornament on metal objects has been practiced since antiquity, and examples survive from as early as the 3rd Century BC. The knife is signed" PARIS" Has Patina, can be polished before delivery! Knife: 12" x 1" Fork: 10 1/4" x 1"
