Very Large Antique Sterling Silver Ship Model - Hallmarked in 1925 - Silver Nef

About the Item

This superb example of a sterling silver Nef carries import marks for London, 1925 by Thomas Callow & Son. Nefs are extravagant table ornaments and containers made of precious metals in the shape of a ship. First recorded in France as early as 1239, this example is a particularly fine, hand chased, early 20th century reproduction of the 16th century style of Nef. Very elaborate and depicting a fully crewed Galleon at sail with canons ready to fire, the ship rests on 4 wheels to allow it to “sail” around the table. The top of the ship lifts off to reveal an empty hull. Traditionally this compartment could hold salt or spices (the latter being very expensive in the Middle Ages). Today it would make a handy place to store an extra bottle of wine for emergencies! The nef measures 32"(81cm) long, 27.5"(70cm) tall and 5.5"(13cm) wide, with a weight of 124.7 troy ounces.
