Sterling Silver, Set of 3 Sweetmeat Dishes, Hallmarked, Birmingham, 1898

Sterling Silver - Set of 3 Sweetmeat Dishes. The following details refer to the left hand larger one. Super quality and very good weight. Stamped with a full English hallmark, applied by the Birmingham Assay Office:- Lower case x - Date letter for Birmingham 1897. Lion - Sterling silver quality guarantee. Anchor - Birmingham Assay Office mark. H.W.Ld - Maker`s mark for Henry Williamson Ltd., Spencer Street, Birmingham. A superb sweetmeat or bonbon dish, designed with a pattern of eight panels, four showing fruit, a pineapple and apples with flowers above and below. Each of the four is separated by panel, with a series of rings with flowers above, a surmounted by a shell. The slightly domed base is left vacant. Diameter:- 162 millimetres / 6.38 inches. Height:- 38 mms. / 1.50 ins. Weight:- 115 grams / 3.70 troy ounces. The second of the larger dishes has American marks on the underside - Sterling 925 R Lion The R will, almost definitely be an American maker`s mark. Lion - Sterling silver guaranree 925 - Parts per 1000 - sterling silver quality mark. This will have been made in England by Williamsons who will have sold a batch of unmarked ones for the new owner (retailer) to put his own details on. Just a small bit of detail added to the pattern - hatching round alternate shells. Detail engraved in the base - J A C 1908. Apart from the engraving and the hatching, all other details are the same, except that the weight is a little less - Weight:- 98.7 grams / 3.14 ounces. The smaller dish is an absolute dream. The centre panel - a cherub among flowers, and trying to catch a butterfly. Eight panels - four with horseshoes - the centres with diamond cutouts, separated with geometric panels. The top edge, a continuous band of S scrolls and flowers. Hallmarked for Birmingham 1901. The maker`s mark - WD, for William Devenport, Spencer Street, Birmingham. Diameter:- 117 millimetres / 4.61 inches. Height:- 28 mms. / 1.10 ins. Weight:- 38.1 grams / 1.23 ounces.
