African Nigerian Igbo Wood Carved Maiden Spirit Mask Sculpture
About the Item
A finely carved mask from the early to mid-1900s made by the Igo People of Southeastern Nigeria.
Agbogho, or "maiden spirit" are worn strictly by men at funeral processions or agricultural dance festivals that honor deities and/or prominent members of the village. They represent the Igo ideal of youthful feminine beauty and grace. The masks are characterized by small, balanced features, often elaborate hairstyles or figures on top, and various facial tattoos. These particular masks are quite coveted and becoming harder to find.
Would be a great addition to any African/Tribal art or mask collection or eye-catching accent piece in about any setting.
