About the Item

A wonderful, large original acrylic painting on canvas by Australian Aboriginal artist/author/ activist/dramatist Sally Morgan titled "Marble Bar Pool." The work is signed, dated (1991), and titled by Morgan on the verso. This piece is from the famed Kelton Foundation Collection of important Australian Indigenous Works of Art. The Kelton Foundation is located in Santa Monica, California. The painting was previously sold at Sotheby's Fine Aboriginal and Contemporary Art Auction, Melbourne, on 17 June 1996 (please see Sotheby's lot item sticker on verso). Provenance: Avant Galleries, South Yarra, Victoria, cat. no. 980, reg. no. SM91980A, Sotheby's Fine Aboriginal and Contemporary Art Auction, Melbourne, 17 June 1996, Lot No. 331, acquired from the above, Collection of Richard Kelton and Kerry Smallwood Kelton, Santa Monica Sally Morgan is one of Australia's best-known Aboriginal artists and writers. Her family was part of the Stolen Generation and she grew up in Perth, unaware of her Aboriginal heritage. Morgan was led to believe that she was of Indian descent until the age of 15 at which time she discovered her indigenous Aboriginal heritage (her family belongs to the Palku and Nyamal peoples of the Pilbara). This experience of having her origins hidden from her and her subsequent quest for identity served as her inspiration for her 1987 autobiography, My Place.
