Matched Pair of Cat Carvings by Linvel Barker, Kentucky

About the Item

Linvel Barker was a retired metalworker turned folk artist. He didn't start carving until 1984 and he would rough out the shapes on a band saw and his wife would help him finish these. These particular cats were done in 1996 and a very similar cat was featured on the spine of the book “Contemporary American Folk Art – A Collector’s Guide". I have yet to see another matching set of animals by Linvel Barker, so I believe these are unique. “If you can see what’s in the wood, you can carve it out. There ain’t no paint in wood, and you don’t need none.” -Linvel Barker.
