About the Item

This uniquely decorated ceiling lamp was designed in an era in which Finland saw the birth of many of its most iconic lighting models. It was a period of consistency, excellence, and sophistication design wise. Itsu, short for Itä-Suomen Sähkö (eng. Eastern Finland Electricity), was a small, lesser known manufactory that produced characteristic models in small quantities. By the 1950s, Finland had established itself as a force for innovation in design. The best qualities of Finnish light fixtures’ are their atmospheric light and disciplined, functionalist design that is not short of subtle decorative elements. Not only were Finnish models more decorated, the decorative elements were also quite distinctive compared to other European models. This model has subtle elements that are “disguised” by the brass frame and the large opal shades. At first, the organic shape and colour of the three opal glass shades catch the attention, supported by brass holders and curved arms. The shades are arranged airily so that the elaborate brass cluster can be seen from almost all angles. Stemming from the brass cup is the curved cluster with a floral end. The brass spring around the cluster’s neck is a signature Itsu element and can be found on numerous of their models originating from the 40s and 50s. Finally, along with the straight brass rod, three curved brass arms stem from the cluster holding a hanging polymer crystal. They are especially decorative when the light is lit. Accentuating these shapes is the polished brass that features a nice warm and even patina. Overall, the composition of the shapes and clever decorative elements give this ceiling lamp a lovely personality that isn’t loud but still stands out, which is an essential Finnish design virtue. ?Condition: In good vintage condition.
