Franz West Meta-Memphis chainlink Suspension Lamp, Memphis Milano, Italy, 1991

About the Item

Franz West (1947–2012) was known for his provocative, boundary-pushing sculptures and furniture. His work aimed to expand the way audiences interact with art and functional objects. Taking inspiration from the Actionist and performance art movements of the 1960s and ’70s, West crafted pieces that encourage engagement and confound viewer expectations. In 2011, he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale. The chainlink Suspension Lamp was a reinterpretation of the Privat Lampe, its floor lamp predecessor. Suspending chains horizontally creates a striking and surrealist chandelier. Two bulbs are situated at each end of the chain, the pendant balanced in a perfect equilibrium. Some age and beautiful industrial patina to the metal. Rewired and PAT tested to UK standards.
