Art Nouveau Lamp in Bronze Signed Alexandre Clerget, 19th Century
About the Item
Art Nouveau lamp mounted on a sculpted and chased bronze vase, signed A. Clerget. This lamp carved in relief, presents a seated woman forming a handle, a head of sylvan among vine leaves and grapes winding a spout. The shaft of this 1900 light fixture is stylized with mermaids, supernatural creatures and fish slithering among waves. A white satin pagoda shade tops this lamp. The whole rests on a circular marble base. The sculpture is signed Alexandre Clerget (1856-1931), a sculptor and goldsmith of the late 19th century known for his art objects of Art Nouveau aesthetics.

There are no visible foundry marks on the bronzes. Born in Geneva in 1792 in Switzerland, Pradier was the son of a Protestant family from Toulouse. He left for Paris in 1807 to work with his elder brother, Charles-Simon Pradier, an engraver, and also attended the École des Beaux-Arts beginning in 1808.
