Fabrizio Cocchia & Gianfranco Fini for New Lamp 'Ascissa' Lamp

About the Item

Fabrizio Cocchia & Gianfranco Fini for New Lamp, 'Ascissa' table or floor lamp, polished aluminum, translucent plastic (methacrylate), Italy, circa 1970 The Ascissa lamp, designed by the visionary duo Fabrizio Cocchia & Gianfranco Fini for the radical lighting company New Lamp, is a peculiar lighting object from around 1970. Its design concept revolves around three parallelepipeds, constructed and assembled according to the Cartesian axes. In mathematics, a Cartesian plane is a two-dimensional coordinate system defined by the intersection of two perpendicular lines, typically known as the x-axis and y-axis. These rectangular structures are crafted from polished aluminum, which not only adds a sleek, modern aesthetic but also serves as a reflective surface. An intriguing play of volumes and a captivating haptic scene is present as the shapes interact with the aluminum. The tops are vividly outlined due to the light that shines through the methacrylate tops. The light also escapes through round apertures, casting soft, ambient light. The Ascissa lamp is more than just a light fixture; it is a piece of functional art that embodies a radical and experimental approach to lighting design. Gianfranco Fini (1936) is a multidisciplinary Italian artist, architect and furniture designer. At the age of eighteen, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and continued his education a few years later at the Faculty of Architecture of the La Sapienza University in Rome. He joined a group of young artists who were dedicated to the avant-garde movement, later known as the ‘School of Piazza del Popolo’. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Gianfranco Fini's artistic career took off as he participated in a few exhibitions on Italian postmodern art, and eventually had the opportunity to exhibit an installation and performative project at the 1975 Venice Biennale. It was also during this period that Fini designed a series of lamps and ‘lighting sculptures’ for New Lamp; an Italian lighting manufacturer. In 1976, Gianfranco Fini founded ‘Studio Fini Architettura’ and within the same year he won a competition for the Damascus Academy of Fine Arts in Syria and for his architectural design of the Consiglio Regionale d'Abruzzo, former Palace of the Region of L'Aquila, in Italy. Fini designed various of residential planning projects, theatre and movie set designs, industrial design, and interior decorations. Among these projects is the design of the San Marco church and Ceroli theatre in Sardinia. Only recently Studio Fini Design is founded as a subsidiary of Studio Fini Architettura; a family-run interior design company that has his showroom in Casa de Campo Marina in the Dominican Republic. Kindly note that the lamp is in good, used condition with signs of age and use, including scratches and spots. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.
