Gjlla Giani for Nucleo Sormani ‘Radar’ Table Lamps in Pewter

About the Item

Gjlla Giani for the Nucleo Division of Sormani, 'Radar' table lamps, pewter and glass, Italy, 1971 These rare table lamps are designed by the Italian architect Gjlla Giani for the Nucleo Division of Sormani. The lamp embodies a uniform design; simplistic yet very strong in lines and proportions. Giani created the illusion that the spherical light bulb is floating on the semicircular shade. The stylistic roundness is also discernible in the base, featuring a cylindrical shape. The corpus is made entirely of pewter, which contributes to its monochrome look, but when the light is switched on, the pewter is accentuated by a warm- toned glow. The family-owned company Sormani was established in 1961 in the northern Italian town of Arosio. At the end of the sixties, the firm distinguished itself by its avant-garde furniture and furnishings in plastics. Richard Neagle was among the first using vacuum-formed plastic for the creation of his ‘Nike’ furniture line in 1968. The Nucleo Division was particularly focused on lighting experimenting with different forms and materials, which resulted in sculptural and artistic appearances. • Studio Salvatori for Nucleo Sormani Rare Prototype 'Model 4 ' Table Lamp
    By Sormani, G. Salvatori & A. Bazzini
    Located in Waalwijk, NL
Studio Salvatori, (G. Salvatori, A. Bazzini) for the Nucleo Division of Sormani, lamp, model ‘4’, aluminum, silk-screened plexiglass, Italy 1971 Rare prototype of the model ‘4’ table lamp, designed by G. Salvatori and A. Bazzini for the Nucleo Division of Sormani. This wonderful lamp is a great example of the technical advances in lamp design in Italy, starting in the late 1960s. It represents an imaginative response to the availability of translucent plexiglass sheets. The use of plexiglass opened a whole new range of possibilities in the field of lamp design. The material has the transparent quality of glass, while at the same time being less fragile and therefore less dangerous in use. It also has a very specific way of transmitting the light, which appears to be passing through the sheet slower than through glass. Together with the almost hallucinating pattern in the plexiglass, that is lit from below by four bulbs, this lamp has hypnotizing qualities. The family-owned company Sormani was established in 1961 in the northern Italian town of Arosio. At the end of the sixties, the firm distinguished itself by its avant-garde furniture and furnishings in plastics. Richard Neagle was among the first using vacuum...
