Oscar Bach Style Wall Mirror

About the Item

For your consideration is this circa 1920s cast metal mirror in the style of Oscar Bach. The top has a griffin perched atop a seashell which is flanked on either side by a dragon whose tail coils down cattail plants that flank the sides of the mirror. The bottom edge has a frog surrounded on either side by flowers with long leaves. The glass is original and has a beveled edge. The mirror is backed by its original wood panel with darkened finish.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. All original and structurally excellent. Loss to one dragon wing. Chip to bottom edge of glass. The silver backing of the mirror shows some oxidation correct for age.

    Italianate mirror and console set designed and manufactured by Oscar Bach, 1923. Copper alloy with dark brown chemical patina, glass, lacquer, tinned sheet metal. The mirror is referenced in on the official Oscar Bach website in the category featured work under mirrors. The website was created by "The friends of Oscar Bach" which is dedicated to the life and work of Oscar Bach. From the description of the mirror. The framing panels of this Italianate mirror consist of foliate scrolls within rectangular borders, laid over lacquer panels. The side, top, and bottom panels contain vines with triangular leaves, textured fruit and leaves, and berries, all imposed over red lacquer. Each of the four corner panels depicts a four-leafed blossom on an open square device, imposed over black lacquer. Each of these eight lacquered panels is framed by a simple molding, and a ribboned slip molding surrounds the glass that lies within the frame made by the lacquered panels. Above this ornate rectangular frame is a pediment containing a classical mask with lobed hair or crown and down-turned mouth, flanked by converging S-scrolls with petaled flowers. Below the frame are complimentary bound scrolls, each with a hanging leaf pendant. A demilune slap of white marble (patinated over time) sits atop of the matching demilune console...
