About the Item
Cute silver painted Swedish grace Art Deco mirror. Showing traces of time and use but with a nice patina. Little hook to hang it to the wall. Perfect to fit in narrow places.
Son patronyme officiel, Swedish Grace - " la grâce suédoise " -, ne lui a pas été octroyé par un spécialiste local de l'art décoratif, mais par le critique d'architecture britannique Philip Morton Shand, qui cherchait un terme pour qualifier cette production spécifique apparue à la fin des années 1910. Sa durée donc : 1917-1930 peu ou prou, une période brève et néanmoins remarquable quant aux arts décoratifs du XXe siècle. La raison ? Une esthétique élégante et raffinée, mais délicieusement simple. Ce style aux couleurs subtiles, qui mêle néoclassicisme, art déco et quelques réminiscences du XVIIIe siècle suédois, supplante alors Art nouveau et Romantisme national en vigueur, et se décline en un mobilier et des objets aux lignes élémentaires rehaussées de détails exquis. Outre des influences d'Afrique du Nord ou d'Amérique du Sud, s'y déploient également quantité de motifs antiques : la Grèce, Rome, les Etrusques, la Perse, la Chine ancienne, sans oublier l'Egypte. Pas étonnant, l'époque des grandes découvertes archéologiques bat son plein. Dès 1917, une exposition dans la fameuse galerie d'art stockholmoise Liljevalchs, sur l'île de Djurgården, dévoile les prémices de cette " grâce " décorative à travers le mobilier de Carl Malmsten, les céramiques de Wilhelm Kåge et les textiles de Märta Måås-Fjetterström. Mais le premier coup d'éclat aura lieu en 1925, lors de l'Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs, à Paris. Le temple néogrec édifié par Carl Bergsten, qui fait office de Pavillon national et où s'exhibent les meubles de Gunnar Asplund, Carl Hörvik ou Uno Åhrén et les sculptures d'Ivar Johnsson, rafle une ribambelle de Prix.
