Franco Poli Locanda double bed with canopy produced by Bernini, Italy 1982

About the Item

Wooden double bed with canopy, conceived by Franco Poli in 1982 and known as the Locanda model, was brought to life through the craftsmanship of Bernini. In the 1980s, Italy witnessed a continual pursuit of balance between tradition and innovation. A hedonistic taste prevailed, prioritizing aesthetic conformity over deep-seated conviction, finding fulfillment in material possessions. Designers, emerging from decades of experimentation, played a crucial role in satisfying the demands of discerning clientele while navigating evolving aesthetic sensibilities. Franco Poli embarked on a reinterpretation of bedroom furniture, traditionally compartmentalized by function, infusing each piece with heightened evocative power through personal redesign. The result was the "Locanda" series, realized in 1982 under Bernini's stewardship. The collaboration with this esteemed brand, celebrated for its mastery in showcasing wood, proved to be one of contemporary design's most fruitful partnerships. Poli found in Bernini a platform to articulate his authentic aesthetic vision, ultimately assuming the role of its artistic director from 1977 to 2009. This symbiotic relationship between a Venetian manufacturing powerhouse and an architect attuned to their shared cultural heritage propelled the legacy of past cabinetmakers, reverence for wood, and its artistic potential towards the realm of recognized design. At the series' core, featured prominently in the 1982 edition of "Ottagono" magazine, lies the bedroom ensemble. Dominated by a sweeping curved canopy, Poli achieves harmonious aesthetic equilibrium, idealizing the bed within a perfect cube. The resulting impression is akin to inhabiting a "room within a room," intensifying the sense of seclusion and intimacy. Poli's design transcends convention with its light, sinuous form resting upon a broad platform, evoking the tranquility of an oriental tatami. This contemporary masterpiece seamlessly integrates into broader interior design narratives, harmonizing the coexistence of past and present in a tapestry of aesthetic freedom. The furniture, an original artifact from its era, remains impeccably preserved, accompanied by a complementary slatted base. Manufacturer's marks and labels attest to its authenticity.
