Pair Of Brass Stirrups, 19th Century, Spanish Colonial

About the Item

An elegant pair of heavy cast brass stirrups with Neoclassical relief decoration, the highlight being the bold anthemion motifs clasping the bar that catches the stirrup leathers. There is an almost identical pair in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY. The rope twist and patterns along the edges are noted by the Met catalogue to represent the stitched textile and leather elements of similar Peruvian lined stirrups. Metal sheath stirrups would protect the wearer in brush and combat alike. Polished and lacquered, so they will not need polishing. Good antique condition, dings and wear, some variation in patina. *(Last photo shows the Met stirrup, the tarnished one, for comparison.) H: 4 ¾ W: 9 ¼ D: 5 ¼
