Early 19th Century Neoclassical Automaton Windmill Sewing Box
About the Item
Rare early 19th century working automaton sewing box with hidden compartments for necessaries and sewing implements. Original handmade clockwork inside which operates a working windmill. Ormolu mounts and neoclassical temple structure. Stairs pullout / pull-out to reveal compartments as do the tiny ormolu cupid niches. Mirrored inside to give a feeling of infinity. Glazed glass pained windows, a middle tray for thread. Small doors open for storage or novelty. Obviously this was made by a learned person for a betrothal gift or for a gift of friendship. Flag on top finial is punch dated "1803". Case is of rosewood and African mahogany. Alabaster columns. Ormolu mounts.
