This Antique Universal Ophthalmometer Eye Exam Machine by General Optical Company is stamped “Pat Oct 24th 1911”. This is an optical optometrist device to measure the curvature of the anterior surface of the cornea, the chief refracting surface of the human eye. It can thus deliver a primary index of a patient's astigmatism or other corneal irregularities. This is a very heavy piece of equipment. This machine is made of cast iron and brass components with knobs that adjust various parts and apparatuses on the machine. This machine is very sophisticated for being over 100 years old.
