Chinese Lattice Wall Panel
About the Item
This elegant wall lattice once fit inside tracks in the floor and ceiling for easy removal. Though visually simple, close inspection reveals the lattice to be finely beveled with a sharply pointed primary side and a flat back side. Though lattice walls were common in China, this one is somewhat unusual in its shortness and heaviness.
The piece is covered in natural black tree lacquer. The piece is from Shanxi province and dates to the 19th century. It was once part of a large set of panels that enclosed a courtyard. Only two of the panels were salvageable and this one is the last available. The panel is decorative on its own but offers interesting possibilities to divide space in a room (possibly with added framing) or placement on a wall as a backdrop for photography or other art.
