Japanese Antique Pair Large Red And Gilt Elephant And Lion Temple Benches, 1925
About the Item
Here's a wonderful find from our acquisitions trip to Japan.
We were fortunate to find this Art Deco period pair (2) matching hand-carved, hand red lacquered and gilt embellished temple wooden benches. The white elephant bench and matching shi-shi komainu temple lion both originally came from a temple near Kobe. Quite sturdy, they may have been entry sitting or shoe changing benches and can comfortably accommodate one to two adults. We date these furniture treasures to the later Taisho era, circa 1925.
Elegant decor and likely unique, what an honor they are to sit upon. If only these gentle beasts could talk and relate their history and experiences. The silky smooth red lacquer with bands of gilded finishes extent are signatures of superb Japanese craftsmanship and serve to authenticate their appropriate old age. Remnants of original textile padding on the bottoms of their feet are still present. They offer a rare pleasure that only Japanese master artisans provided some 95+ years ago.
One only pair.
