Antique Gothic Blanket Chest / Trunk with Amazing Patina & Original Lock ca 1700
Located in Lisse, NL
Marvelously hand-crafted chest from the late 1600s or early 1700s. One of the things that make antiques so appealing & attractive is the fact that most pieces were handmade in recognizable styles, with proven techniques AND with natural materials that could and would stand the test of time. The longer back in time we go, the more that seems to be the case. This amazing chest from circa 1680-1720 is clearly made in the Gothic Style with Gothic church window-like carvings. With Gothic style chests of this age being very rare, we were (and still are) very enthousiastic about finding it. Put together and strengthened with hand-forged, wrought iron brackets, nails AND with very large dovetails, the master carpenter provided the techniques that would guarantee the owner a chest that would last him (or her) a lifetime. As it turned out, his workmanship, in this case, created a chest that has already served some 15 generations. This heavy quality chest is made of solid elm and wrought iron only and the centuries of usage and natural aging have given this Gothic antique a patina that is simply heavenly. The striking and deeply hand-carved Gothic cathedral-like windows, but also the hand forged lock...

HISTORY Attributed to the Scottish company of Alex Boswell founded by James Boswell at the end of the 18th century. An established date of 1790 was noted by the company nearly 100 years later in their adverts and James is listed in the Edinburgh trade directories of 1820 as a trunk maker at 25 College Wynd. (Alex was also listed there 5 years later.) The name must have changed to Alex Boswell around 1825 when it is first seen in the directories. The business prospered and expanded throughout the 19th Century with a partner for a short while and the third generation also becoming involved. Brush making was an important part of their work and shared an equal billing in their Post Office Directory listings with Trunk makers for most of the century. Their labels and adverts, which changed little in their history, state that Boswell sold various India Trunks...

Louis Vuitton Rayée Steamer Trunk
Located in New Orleans, LA
This outstanding and extremely rare Louis Vuitton steamer trunk is a treasure. Crafted in the firm's flat-top style, this trunk boasts the Rayée ("Stripped") canvas. Beautifully preserved, the trunk features all original hardware and is adorned with a variety of period travel stickers from all over the world, a sure indication of this trunk’s well-travelled past. Inside, the linen lining is in excellent condition, complete with a ribbon-hatched lid and features Vuitton’s rare, and highly desirable, striped trunk label on its interior, with the serial number 14378 written in pencil. Rayée trunks are extremely rare as the canvas often proved too delicate for the rigors of travel. Louis Vuitton is considered the world’s first luxury company, and its luggage and leather goods set the standard by which all others are measured. To find a period trunk by this company, in such excellent condition, attests to the superior quality of its craftsmanship. The Rayée trunks were produced by Vuitton from 1872-1888 and were the earliest of Louis Vuitton's patterned trunks. The red-and-white pattern was joined in 1876 by the brown-and-beige variation seen in the present example. This striped design was created to replace Vuitton’s famed Trianon flat-topped trunk. The Trianon had attracted many imitators thanks to its innovative design, so this new canvas pattern was used to distinguish Vuitton’s superior construction from all others. The distinctively striped canvas was used until the introduction of the Damier canvas in 1888. The most famous and valuable trunks were made by the Louis Vuitton company...
