Poul Kjærholm Iconic PK 22 Chair reupholstered in Cowhide, E. Kold Christensen 2

About the Item

Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980) the praised Danish designer, the "furniture architect", designed the emblematic PK22 Chair in 1956. Standing out from the other Danish mid century designers, his predilection material wasn't wood but steel. This PK22 gets its outstanding comfort from the cowhide which is floating above the metal structure, thanks to the curved crossbars that holds the feet together without interfering with the seat's ergonomy. The obviously powerful and effective design speaks for itself, fitting perfectly a more intimate space needing structure and discretion thanks to the thin and light side view, as well as larger rooms thanks to the wide seat and backrest creating subtle geometric shapes. The chair has been reupholstered in an elegant black and white cowhide, whose unique pattern interacts gracefully with the design. The frame bears the unmistakable E. Kold Chrinstensen mark, Kjærholm's friend and his designs's original manufacturer from the 1957 origin till 1982. Poul Kjaerholm designed the abstract composition illustrating the acronym EKC. this pk22 was made in 1963, we have a copy of the original invoice.

The Djinn lounge chairs, designed by Olivier Mourgue (born 1939) for Airborne in 1963, are one of those very few quintessential and emblematic early space age designs which - much like the character from the 2001 a Space Odissey movie where they were notoriously featured - evaded space and time to, at first glance, catch the eye and the heart of the beholder, no matter the context nor the timeframe. Rightfully considered as the climax of the 1960s french seat...

  • Mobichalet Brutalist set of 4 Solid Wood Chairs 1960
    By Mobichalet
    Located in Santa Gertrudis, Baleares
Mobichalet, founded by a teacher turned cabinetmaker named Joseph Deffense in Beauraing, Belgium, in 1950, had been active a decade, aiming at furnishing second homes with rustic furnitures, which left a sought after legacy of strikingly powerful and peculiar handcrafted brutalist pieces. The chairs forming this set are typical of the designer : the seat itself is a solid slab of pine wood, the headrest is thick, a simple rectangular cuboid, and, as expected in a brutalist design, the construction is very simple yet efficient and sturdy with no sharp angles. This extremely nice set features an homogeneous seat height and very good backrest angle through all the chairs, ensuring an unexpected and consistent comfort. Under the seat, as illustrated in the pictures, the brand logo is directly carved - or drilled - in the wood with large stencil...

  • Poul Kjærholm for E. Kold Christensen Pair of 'PK20' Lounge Chairs in Leather
By Poul Kjærholm, E. Kold Christensen

Poul Kjærholm for E. Kold Christensen, pair of lounge chairs model 'PK20', leather, chrome-plated steel, Denmark, 1968 A highly modern design that embraces clear lines and curvaceous shapes. A cantilever chair is all about ease and comfort as it provides the characteristic bending function, and together with the high backrest and head cushion, a pleasant seating experience is guaranteed. Kjærholm used chrome-plated steel for the base and black leather for the seating, materials that fit within the modernistic aesthetics of this chair. Poul Kjærholm (1929-1980) was a Danish designer and cabinetmaker. He had a particular interest in different construction materials; especially steel which he considered a natural material with the same artistic fineness as other natural materials. Poul Kjaerholm was employed at Fritz Hansen for about a year, where he designed a number of noteworthy chair prototypes. In 1955 Poul Kjærholm initiated his collaboration with manufacturer Ejvind Kold Christensen, which lasted until Poul Kjærholm's death in 1980. In 1982, Fritz Hansen took over the production and sales of "The Kjærholm Collection", developed from 1951 to 1967, designs, which are logical to the minute detail with an aura of exclusivity. In 2007 Fritz Hansen added two new pieces to the Kjærholm Collection. Pieces that were never in production before, the PK8...
