Rare pair of 19th Century Gustavian Faux Bamboo Chairs
About the Item
Rare pair of early 19th century Gustavian faux bamboo chairs in their original finish. Ca 1810 Stockholm, Sweden.
The chairs are attributed to Ephraim Sthal. Supplier to the Royal Court and one of the most sophisticated and inventive makers of his period.
Chinese furniture of bamboo became known in Europe through the trade in East Asia and was imported especially during the 18th century. As a result of the interest in Chinese interiors, England began manufacturing bamboo imitation furniture in the mid-18th century. Ephraim Sthal certainly studied current pattern books or used an imported chair as a model to these oriental elements in his production. We must not forget Lovisa Ulrika exotic pearl, China Palace in Stockholm as an inspiration as well.
