French Deco Leather and Mohair Daybed

About the Item

This versatile French deco daybed (circa late 1930s) can be converted from a bench to daybed, when the arms are removed and reoriented into the appropriate frame fittings. The stained mahogany trim complements both the rust-colored mohair cushion and the dark coral leather beautifully. The piece retains its original leather and mohair cushion (a typical upholstery contrast of the Deco period). Unique feature to the piece is the storage compartment under the seat, which can be accessed when the cushion is removed. There is one old repair to a section of the mahogany trim (not visible when this side is positioned in the back). There are also small spots of loss to the mohair cushion throughout and expected age to the leather. One of the adjustable sides rests slightly lower than the other, by design (the higher side was intended for the headrest, while the lower, the foot). Overall, this piece is in good, vintage condition with expected wear commensurate with age. Length when fully extended (as daybed): 82" Length with arms up (as bench): 52".

  • French Art Deco Sycamore and Mahogany Armoire by Dominique
By Andre Domin & Marcel Genevriere for Maison Dominique, Dominique
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
Art Deco armoire with sycamore veneer and mahogany interior with brass medallion/locking mechanism and hardware by André Domin and Marcel Genevrière for Maison Dominique (Paris, France, ca. 1930s). Impressive, museum-quality piece, refinished roughly a decade ago in Paris using the correct French Polishing technique of the creation period. Heavy doors open to reveal eight removable (but non-adjustable) shelves supported by threaded brass brackets. The weight of the doors requires the unit to be wall mounted. There are holes original to the piece in the top back corners for this purpose. There is veneer loss to the top back corner of the cabinet, which was previously repaired and cannot be seen at eye level, and a spot of veneer loss to bottom corner of one of the doors, along with light wear/nicks to the front and a couple of gashes and small holes to the inside of the doors (all relatively minor, given its age). Overall, very good vintage condition. Stamped signature present, as shown. From the collection of a prominent French collector whose London flat...
