Exciting Swedish design by Börge Lindau - Lounge chair in set of 4

About the Item

Börge Lindau (1932–1999) was born in Åhus - Sweden, graduated from Slöjdföreningen in Gothenburg and became one of the country's most valued designers. Börge founded Blue Station in 1986. A strong personality; stubborn, humorous and demanding, both towards himself and towards his surroundings. For Börge, life was about doing things. It could be many different things, such as designing furniture, glass and lamps or designing interiors for libraries, churches and hotels. He started the Aoseum group for the preservation of Åhu's cultural life and invited to jazz and theater at Blå Station. Börge was born into the industry, following a family tradition. His father was a carpenter and had a furniture store in the small village of Åhus on Sweden's southeast coast. Börge began to study furniture and architecture at the crafts association in Gothenburg. It was here that he met fellow student Bo Lindekrantz, with whom he eventually formed the design team Lindau & Lindekrantz. Together, they made many attention-grabbing interiors and became successful and appreciated furniture designers. Their collaboration lasted for many decades and during their time they were a leader in Swedish furniture design. It started in the mid-60s, when Lammhults Mekaniska made contact with Lindau & Lindekrantz. At that time, they manufactured simple steel furniture and looked for ways to innovate and change their focus. The young designers presented a radical furniture series in thick clear lacquered steel tubes and upholstered seats, the heritage from the 30s was clear but the expression was completely new. The series was very successful, both in Sweden and abroad, and the two designers had quickly made a name for themselves. They were technically proficient and were known for their innovative, clear and pared-down design language. They developed furniture families, furniture concepts rather than solitaires and that became something of their signature. The original idea was to build a rich and varied collection of stools, chairs and tables around a simple molded birch ring. As a furniture producer, Börge suddenly discovered that he had the freedom to choose for himself, and immediately he set up a strict set of rules around his furniture family, which he called OBLADO. The included materials must be environmentally friendly and, as far as possible, harmless both to manufacture, use and to break down far into the future. The cornerstones of the collection are light Finnish birch, stainless steel and vegetable tanned leather. The surface would be either “not colored” (ie the natural color of the material) or “not colored” (black). In addition, he would only make such furniture that he himself liked and that he considered had a justification in the market. Lindau & Lindekrantz was awarded the Lunning Prize (named after the Danish owner of Georg Jensen A/S Frederik Lunning) in 1969 and thus belonged to the innermost circle of exclusive Scandinavian designers. This item is the Hövding BBL chair with a seat in Cognac colored leather and a bold curved back shield made of birch veneer.
