About the Item
Crafted from gorgeous quarter-sawn white oak, this rare high-back rocking chair was designed by the legendary and enigmatic architect Henning Kjærnulf for the Danish furniture maker EG Kvalitetsmøbel in the 1970's. The crest rail features a subtle profile of Kjærnulf's iconic razor blade motif over a row of delicate dart-form slats, which create drama in shadow and line. The clean-lined silhouette is a rare moment of restraint for Kjærnulf, allowing the organic beauty of the oak to shine. The armrests appear to have been refinished with luxurious rosewood veneer, while the cushion is finished in traditional Scandinavian striped "olmer" twill fabric.
Henning Kjærnulf is among the exalted few designers to possess a voice so singular and a body of work so prolific as to be credited with the invention of an entire design style. Propelled by fine craftsmanship and a masterful understanding of traditional carving and millwork, Kjærnulf's iconic "Danish Brutalist" furniture playfully combines elements from earlier design movements - including the Arts & Crafts, Rococo, and Jacobean styles - with Modern silhouettes and a Scandinavian palette of natural woods to create a look that is both entirely unique and instantly recognizable.
