Fully Restored Liberty's London Thebes Stool L Wyburd Original Antique Victorian

About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this absolutely sublime fully restored Victorian Liberty’s London Thebes stool designed by L Wyburd This piece is as iconic and stylish as they come, anyone who knows and follows fine furniture will recognise this piece instantaneously The design of this three-legged stool is based on an ancient Egyptian prototype, an example of which, dating to 1550-1300 BC, is in the collection of the British Museum (EA 2481). The Liberty stool, patented in 1884, is one of three models, copying Egyptian originals, retailed by the firm. For a full discussion of the nineteenth century’s fascination with Egyptian stools see Donato Esposito, ‘From Ancient Egypt to Victorian London: the impact of ancient Egyptian furniture on British art and design 1850-1900’, The Journal of the Decorative Art Society, 27 (2003), pp. 81-93. This model was later reprised by the Austrian architect Adolph Loos (1870-1933). In terms of the condition as mentioned this has been fully restored to include having the frame checked and secured, its been lightly washed back and French polished. The stool has very old repairs all over, a lovely metal plate runs the full length of one leg Dimensions Height 35cm Width 46cm Depth 42cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses Condition Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.
