18th Century French Oak Hunt Buffet with Game Bird and Fish Panels
About the Item
From the 1700s, this unusual French hunt buffet has expertly carved paneled doors portraying a game bird and a fish. The game bird is hanging from its feet with knotted ribbons, while the fish hangs by a hook, also from knotted ribbons. Both are within an open panel having canted corners with florets. The top has a peripheral linear molding of stylized drapery swags, and beneath this is another linear acanthus leaf molding placed flush with underside of the top. The sides of the buffet are geometric rectangles, and there are three-quarter, pilaster balusters set into the corners. The baseboard moldings are linear dentil with linear egg and dart beneath. These rest upon a quarter round molding. All this rests upon rectangular block feet hidden beneath.
The buffet has deep motifs, carved from heavy French oak. A piece like this would have been in a country kitchen or hunt lodge in France, during the late 1700s.
