17th Spanish Walnut Cabinet on Stand, Desk, Original ‘Bargueño’
About the Item
Spanish desk (“bargueño”) in walnut.
17th century with “bridge-shapped”. Decorated on the exterior with metal applications (open-work, textile background) and bow handles with central lentil. It stands on a "foot bridge" base joined by straight shoes with carved front and a straight “chambrana” with arches and elements in relief (of a certain Mannerist style).
Inside, the desk stands out for its decoration based on columns, turned and gilded, arranged in different spaces between two to two, arranged in a symmetrical composition often used in these models (three spaces differentiated horizontally, the lack of a clear axis –“capilla” or chapel- in the center is more usual in more traditional models). The lower register houses a large central drawer and two smaller ones on each side. The five are decorated with a Serlio-inspired plan (reduced arch flanked by two smaller semicircular arches), typical of Spanish furniture since the 16th century (and which would continue in some examples during the 17th century). This architectural scheme is repeated with differences in the rest of the furniture space. This type of desk was the most common one in the Spanish Baroque, maintaining influences and relationships with national examples of the past and differentiating radically from the rest of European works both in appearance and in the chosen materials, this is special because is so rich or colorful in their interior.
