Rare Dutch Maternity or Child's Cabinet, in Dutch 'Luiermandskast', circa 1650

About the Item

A rare Dutch Renaissance 17th-century Maternity room or Child's cabinet, in Dutch called 'Luiermandskast' circa 1650, possibly the circle of Herman Doomer A 'luiermandskast' is a quite rare piece of Dutch furniture. A luiermandskast was originally made for the maternity room. In this room the new mother spent the first six to eight weeks with her newborn baby. The cabinet was filled with children's clothes and the “luiermand” or layette basket was inside or on top of the cabinet. This was a basket that was made of wood or silver. In a 17th century inventory of the dolls house of Petronella de la Court is mentioned a “Luyermandskabinetje” This miniature version is still standing in its original place in the doll's house, which is currently in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. This cabinet is made from oak and veneered with ebony and rosewood. The cabinet has architectural designs that are typical for mid-17th century Dutch furniture. The cabinet is on a stand with four legs. Above the legs is a frieze with carved faces, which are holding brass rings and contains a drawer. The base of the upper part of the cabinet contains a drawer, and the basements of the pillars. There are five columnar pilasters, topped with ionic capitals. The lower part of the central pillar is movable to hide the key entry. On the pair of doors and sides are so-called cushions. These cushions are made very refined and are made out of ebony and rosewood profiles. The refined details on the top part of the cabinet are also found on a to Herman Dommer attributed cabinet, which is part of the Rijksmuseum collection. The interior is simple and contains tree shelves. This cabinet is related to a cabinet which is part of the Rijksmuseum collection (BK-1953-1) The Rijksmuseum cabinet is attributed to Herman Doomer, the most famous “Ebbenhoutwerker” in 17th-century Amsterdam. He was the most important furniture maker in Amsterdam and the only craftsman who was portrayed by Rembrand. Provenance: The Clifford Family.
