Pine Chest of Three Drawers

About the Item

This is a splendid three drawer chest with an interesting configuration of drawers. The top drawer is shallow and the middle one is the deepest. The bottom drawer is just in-between. All three have original ceramic knobs. Applied crown molding is set to give a step-down edge to the top. The front corners of the case have a broad applied flute, topped with a plain corbel. The drawer fronts have a strong grain pattern and the piece is constructed of fairly clear wood with good color.

What a handsome chest of drawers! It’s a long time since we last offered a Scottish chest of drawers and this one is a beauty. The piece is built in two sections, necessary for negotiating narrow passages and staircases. The upper section has three deep drawers with the flow of their serpentine fronts unbroken by knobs or pulls. Instead the drawer fronts have finger pulls carved into their undersides. These are flanked by serpentine corbels with a deep flute in the center. The 6.5"high splashback is removable, making the height 48.5". The lower section has three slightly graduated drawers, inset, with wooden knobs. They are flanked by almost full columns, banded, ending in a tall turned foot...

What an extraordinary chest of drawers! The top is plain with a bullnose edge and the sides are nicely paneled. The front corners of the case are boldly reeded and toward the top a sprig of lily of the valley is delicately carved inside the reed. Above this is a massive scrolled acanthus leaf corbel, appearing to support the top. The drawers are more or less equal in depth with faux panels created by an applied mitered molding with a bead running round the inside. The knobs are rare; hardly ever seen They are the classic shape of the ceramic knobs found on much Central European vernacular furniture, except these are carved in wood. The gourd-like feet have similar contours. The oak was finished in dark tones and then was painted over in buttermilk. At some time it was painted white and has worn or been rubbed through to the earlier layers. The result is a delightful piece that need not be confined to the bedroom, but rather can be enjoyed wherever some whimsical storage...
