File Rack by Pierre Jeanneret, Low Cupboard, PJ-050202, Chandigarh, 1957-58

About the Item

File Rack; Pierre Jeanneret; Le Corbusier; Low Cupboard; PJ-050202; Chandigarh; 1957; 1958; 1950s; India; Cabinet; Shelving Unit; Mid-Century Modern; Bookshelf; Sideboard; Room Divider; This double-sided low cupboard, known as "file rack”, in solid wood by Pierre Jeanneret was created for the city of Chandigarh in India, the utopian city designed by his cousin Le Corbusier. A sideboard with six compartments to store and display books, art and other curiosities. Four compartments in the centre and two compartments at the side higher up. The legs are formed by the body's two side panels. Characteristics of this wooden shelving unit are the hidden joints, clear shape and remarkable patinated wood. Its minimalist and pure shape create a raw simplicity. Jeanneret’s designs stand out for their essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. Jeanneret’s file racks were part of the furniture in Chandigarh's secretariat and administrative buildings. A rare design, highly sought after by collectors and design aficionados. It’s a true collector's item that can be used as a bookshelf, sideboard or even as a room divider. The file rack is in excellent original condition. The matching smaller version with five compartments is available in another listing. Check out our Goldwood storefront for more authentic design pieces by Pierre Jeanneret.

  • Office Cane Chairs by Pierre Jeanneret, PJ-SI-28-A, Chandigarh, 1955
    By Pierre Jeanneret
    Located in Antwerp, BE
Iconic "Office Cane Chairs" created by Pierre Jeanneret in the 1950s for the city of Chandigarh in India, the utopian city designed by his cousin Le Corbusier. Made of solid wood with seat and backrest in braided canework. Tilted backrest and asymmetric flat profiled "compass"-type double side leg assembly, with the legs connected by a crosspiece and supporting the armrests. Slanted, slightly curved backrest, separate from the seat. The seemingly floating back as well as the "compass"-type legs are very typical for this office chair. These specific features make the design even more powerful and interesting. The office chair was part of the furniture from the administrative buildings of Chandigarh. It's a true icon, one of the most famous pieces of all Chandigarh items. Jeanneret’s designs stand out for their essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. Another interesting and nowadays relevant fact about these and other Chandigarh chairs is that all pieces were made from the trees which were logged because the city was built, so an early adaptation of ecological thinking. We have four office chairs...
