L'Atelier San Paulo
L'Atelier San Paulo — one of the few South American furniture manufacturers established in the mid-20th century — marries the highest quality materials with the simplicity of form. With the minimalist aesthetic of mid-century modern shapes and the sleekness of modern lines, its furniture has a whisper of sensuality with an element of tension that has seduced devotees over decades. Combining fine materials is the essence of its practices, such as cleverly pairing premium woods with an elegant marble or sensuous leather and gleaming chrome.
Founded by Jorge Zalszupin, a renowned architect and furniture designer, l'Atelier San Paulo designs commercial and residential pieces out of São Paulo, Brazil. Zalszupin was born Jerzy Zalszupin into a Jewish family in 1922 in Poland. He fled to Romania in 1940 to escape the Nazi occupation. He graduated from Bucharest’s École des Beaux-Arts architecture program in 1944 and emigrated to Brazil in 1949, leaving behind war-scarred Europe. After having a successful architecture firm for close to a decade, he pursued his passion for furniture design by opening l'Atelier San Paulo in 1959.
With Zalszupin at the helm, the company’s pieces were often inspired by the works of Oscar Niemeyer, Le Corbusier and Lucio Costa. A focus on local tropical hardwoods, such as jacaranda, imbuia and rosewood for coffee tables, dining chairs and bar carts, celebrates the diversity of Brazil’s forests. By utilizing Argentina’s famous carpincho leather and bright metals such as brass, chrome and stainless steel in its lounge chairs, sofas and serveware, the company’s work adds sophistication and eclectic style to any space.

- Armchair with Wood, Leather and Steel, by Carlo Fongaro, Brazilian Mid-CenturyBy Carlo FongaroLocated in Sao Paulo, SPThis armchair designed by Carlo Fongaro is an exemplary piece of mid-20th-century Brazilian furniture design. The chair combines the use of wood and leather, materials commonly used in Brazilian furniture from that era, known for their durability and aesthetic appeal. The armchair has a distinctive modernist style, featuring sleek lines and an organic form that cradles the body. The wooden frame forms the armrests and a supporting back panel that provides structural integrity and visual warmth. The chair is upholstered in high-quality leather, giving it its rich color and texture, while the cushions are tufted, which is not only a design feature but also serves to keep the padding in place, ensuring long-term comfort and durability. The metal legs of the chair are slender and made of steel, a choice that reflects the era's fascination with new industrial materials and techniques. The use of metal gives the chair a lightweight appearance and complements the natural materials. Carlo Fongaro's designs are not as widely recognized internationally as some of his Brazilian contemporaries like Oscar Niemeyer or the duo of Lina Bo Bardi and Giancarlo Palanti, but his work is appreciated for its craftsmanship and design within the canon of Brazilian modernist furniture...Category

- Jorge Zalszupin tea cart L'Atelier Brazil 1959By Jorge ZalszupinLocated in Roosendaal, Noord BrabantThis stunning trolley is probably the most iconic piece designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured in his own company L’Atelier, Brazil 1959. The Carrinho de Chá or tea trolley originates from 1959 and is considered a timeless classic amongst collectors. The cart can be moved around freely and is built from various materials: a solid iron frame black painted, supports a large origami like bottom shelf. Another shelf sculpted out of solid jacaranda rosewood is placed on top and serves as a removable serving tray which can be used both sides. Two rather large but open brass wheels are placed at the bottom and are a great distinctive feature as the solid brass draws...Category
