Antique Painted Oak Renaissance Style Table from Avignon, France, circa 1870

About the Item

Hand-carved with Renaissance style motifs in the South of France, circa 1870, this painted table hails from Avignon. The oak base has a thick apron adorned with two layers of crenellation and a carved leaf in the center of each side. A thick stretcher embellished with infilled foliate niches (a common Renaissance motif) is surmounted by three full turned baluster and two half-balusters. Both of the half-balusters are part of their corresponding truss, which has a lovely display of volutes and curled leaves flanking a mascaron. There are a pair of small mascarons on top of the volutes, visible from the long sides of the tables. Scrolled feet are festooned with foliate carvings on top of small risers with quarter round molding. A robust base painted antique white, the truss ends and balusters support a beautiful 1 ¼” thick multi-colored marble top with a quarter round molding and rounded corners. The hues of the marble range from light gray to rose, with mottled inclusions of dark gray, red, and black, arranged in wavelike striations. Our Renaissance style table can be used with a variety of interior styles. It can be displayed as a center table in a foyer or library. A unique application would be to install it as a beautiful kitchen island.

Although the wood has since been stripped, the table has a few faint traces of gold remaining in places. The white gesso/paint has been partially left throughout the table base and then glazed over to produce a beautiful and unique finish. This table can also be described as a Louis XIV “table à gibier...
