Low Round Table in Cast Iron - Custom Sizes and Finish Variations Available

About the Item

Capturing the visual functionality of iron work from the industrial revolution period (where bolts are used to physically hold iron parts together, but also as a form of industrial decoration), the "Holey Foam Table" is a conceptual soft-representation composed of cast scrap iron. Deceiving the eye, it appears to have a soft, foam-like texture, but is entirely cast in iron. The item listed is a unique, one-of-a-kind edition, but is fully customizable, and forward editions can be poured in aluminium or bronze, up to 28" inches high, or as low as 20" inches high, for use as a coffee table, a low table, center, hall or side table. In addition to custom sizes and metals, finishing for outdoor placement is also an option - please inquire for additional details, as outdoor finishing requires a longer lead time. The table ships in two parts - the top and base, which are bolted together to form the whole. This piece was originally commissioned for a 2021 exhibition entitled 'Cast Iron', in which eight artists from around the world were tasked with digitally designing exclusive editions of furniture, lighting or functional decorative objects, which the gallery would then facilitate production of, with the help of a fourth generation foundry in Virginia. Each of the digital pieces would be materialized in cast iron, the quintessential symbol of the 19th century. The focus of the exhibition was to marry the material’s origins with the new-age digital hyper-connectivity of design ideas. On the design process of this piece, the artist writes: "I was drawn to the visual functionality of ironmongery in the architecture of bridges, which has a deep history in Britain, dating back to the Industrial Revolution. 'Holey Foam Table' was first realized as a 1:5 scale model made from foam sheets punctured with rivets. The model was 3D scanned and blown to full size, then sent as a digital file across the Atlantic, CNC cut into a mould and then cast into iron. It has gone through many stages of transition, from small to large, foam to iron, soft to rigid, light to heavy, from London to New York, and as a result there is a level of indeterminacy to the final piece. The table is heavy and permanent, a homage to archetype, like a statue, sprouting from the ground. It has a life beyond the designer not least because of its numerous transformations but also because it is cast from scrap iron, which has been melted and given a new form." —Charlotte Kingsnorth

  • Stone Top Coffee Table on Wood Block Base with Cast Glass and Ceramic Details
    By Rafael Prieto
    Located in New York, NY
The centerpiece of Rafael Prieto's debut solo exhibition in 2023 was the "Low Table," a one-of-a-kind work comprising four of the elements Prieto selected to express a sort of spatial poetry through materiality—wood, stone, glass and ceramic. Each material undergoes an individual finishing process to become united in singular form, the disparate entities creating asymetrical balance and contrasting textures pleasing to both the eye and the touch. The slab top is blue sandstone, with rough hewn hand-chiseled edges that ripple with energy. A hand-broken fragment of white-glazed ceramic tile, cast from a mold made using the denim jacket of the designer’s partner, is inlaid into the stone, adding an element of romance and another layer of tactility to the overall piece. The sandstone slab rests atop two solid blocks of expertly-crafted reclaimed yellow pine; sourcing wood that was previously used is the designer’s preference as a sustainability practice, as well as for the richness of character only found in repurposed lumber. One of the wood blocks was hand-carved to receive a volume of crucible-poured glass, cast in a mold made from a granite landscaping boulder. The glass “stone” is a subtly naturalistic design detail, retaining the course surface texture of a boulder, yet entirely transparent. This piece is a unique object of functional art that is conversational in nature, making it the ultimate centerpiece for collectors of contemporary design to treasure for years to come. Since founding Savvy in 2012, Prieto has brought his distinct perspective to the building of artistic, innovative and personal concepts in the arts, hospitality, retail, and more.
