Mid-Century Brass and Smoked Glass Squared Coffee Italian Table Mirror, 1970s

About the Item

Amazing small mid-century brass and smoked bronzed glass square coffee table with mirrored frame on two levels with wheels. This fantastic item was produced in Italy during the 1970s, and it is attributed to Maison Jansen. The straight lines of the two tiers are iconic of the Italian productions during the 1970s and the bronzed and smoked glass is just outstanding and extremely elegant. This piece is perfect as a final touch for a midcentury-style living room, a modern bar or a minimal kitchen. Measurements (cm): Width - 64 Depth - 64 Height - 48. Maison Jansen was a Paris-based interior decoration office founded in 1880 by Dutch-born Jean-Henri Jansen. Jansen is considered the first truly global design firm, serving clients in Europe, Latin America, North America and the Middle East. This House was located at 23, rue de l'Annonciation, Paris, and closed in 1989. From its beginnings Maison Jansen combined traditional furnishings with influences of new trends including Anglo-Japanese style, the Arts and Crafts movement, and Turkish style. The firm paid great attention to historical research with which it attempted to balance clients' desires for livable, usable, and often dramatic space. Within ten years the firm had become a major purchaser of European antiques, and by 1890 had established an antiques gallery as a separate firm that acquired and sold antiques to Jansen's clients and its competitors as well. In the early 1920s Jean-Henri Jansen approached Stéphane Boudin, who was then working in the textile trimming business owned by his father Alexandre Boudin, and brought him on board. Accounts of the arrangement vary. Speculation existed that Boudin was able to provide financial solvency to the prominent but capital-poor atelier. Boudin's attention to detail, concern for historical accuracy, and ability to create dramatic and memorable spaces brought increasing new work to the firm. Boudin was made director and presided over an expansion of the firm's offices and income. Throughout the firm's history, it employed a traditional style drawing upon European design, but influence of contemporary trends including the Vienna Secession, Modernism, and Art Deco has also appeared in Jansen interiors and in much of the custom furniture the firm produced between 1920 and 1950. Under Boudin's leadership, Maison Jansen provided services to the royal families of Belgium, Iran, and Serbia; Elsie de Wolfe, and Lady Olive Baillie's Leeds Castle in Kent, England. The firm's most published work was a project by Boudin and Paul Manno, the head of Jansen's New York office, for the U.S. White House during the administration of John F. Kennedy. At the same time, Jansen completed the interior of the motor yacht Chambel IV, now renamed Northwind II. Northwind II is one of the few remaining complete Jansen commissions. After Stéphane Boudin's death in 1967, colleague Pierre Delbée took over the business. Maison Jansen came under new ownership in 1979 and finally closed in 1989.

The unique combination of straight and pure lines with superb materials, makes this item a go-to for Italian midcentury lovers. This piece smoked glass top will add seductive elegance to a midcentury living room or a studio. Measures (cms): width - 70 depth - 70 height - 40 Romeo Rega is born in Rome on 10 October 1925, third of six children, born and raised in the Trastevere district, in the heart of Rome. In 1943 , at the age of 18, he joins the army as a driver, a position that he holds for the next two years. In 1945, the year of Liberation, he comes into contact with whom he himself calles “the Master”, an excellent blacksmith and forger, from whom he learnes the art of iron. This way he starts his path after his father Piero, also a craftsman. Nine years later he gets married and opens a small shop in Via della Pelliccia, in the Trastevere district. Here he starts to work wrought iron, discovering himself capable of inventing, designing and realizing gates, railings and iron furniture. He is 27 years old when, in 1957, he enrolls in the Albo provinciale delle imprese artigiane (Provincial Register of Craft Enterprises) and opens his first workshop in Vicolo della Frusta 6, where he collaborates with talented masters of wrought iron and forging. At this point arrives the first important order: the design and manufacturing for Cinecittà of the chariots for the American colossal film Ben-Hur, which will be published in 1959. He stays in Vicolo della Frusta until the end of the 1960s, a period in which he dedicated himself to his favorite activity: the design of his own pieces and the relations with people. Among his clients there are personalities from the world of cinema and entertainment, such as Marcello Mastroianni, Renato Rascel and his wife Giuditta Saltarini, Massimo Ranieri. In 1970 he met the filmmaker Massimo Saraceni who encouraged him to broaden his entrepreneurial horizons. The 1970s represent a real revolution for the Italian culture, here start the “golden years” of design. In this roaring context, Romeo manages to apply with creativity the traditional methods usually used to process forging and wrought iron to new industrial materials such as brass, steel and perspex. This is how the famous “Romeo Rega” brand is born, and the serial production of his furniture starts in Vicolo Pian due Torri, in the Magliana district of Rome. The “four-rod” tables, the “Z-shaped” consoles...
