Brazilian Modern Desk in Hardwood with Floating Drawers, Sergio Rodrigues, 1960s

About the Item

Available today, this magnificent Mid-Century Modern desk n hardwood & chrome finishes by Sergio Rodrigues in the sixties is the find of the year! The desk is made in solid rosewood and rosewood veneer with four floating drawers and an impressive large wood top. The quality of the Rosewood is nothing less than spectacular. The wood has been refinished and reveals stunning veins throughout the entire piece. The woodwork is also exquisite and can be seen in the drawers, legs and inside the drawers. Besides minor marks of age the desk is in excellent condition. The set was designed specifically for Bloch Editors, a publishing & broadcasting Brazilian conglomerate. Sergio Rodrigues and Joaquim Tenreiro were both hired to design Modern furniture for the Bloch’s headquarters in Sao Paulo and these chairs belonged to the salons. Owning a piece with such a historical value and limited in numbers (as it was done specifically for Bloch), not only will it be a beautiful piece but also a collectible or an actual piece of art. Attached vintage and contemporary publications showcasing the same model. The desk is showcased in our showroom with a “Commander” armchair and a file cabinet from Jorge Zalszupin and the convo is nothing less than spectacular. Sergio Rodrigues started working in the 1950s when the foundations of modern Brazilian architecture were already laid out, yet furniture design was still nascent. Rodrigues set himself the task of designing furniture that was both truly Brazilian and modernist at the same time. Over the course of his career, he accomplished this task by defining a robust, modern, and pure language reflected in his work. Size: H29.5, W78.7, D35.4 (in) H75, W200, D90 (cm).
