About the Item
Craft :
Working with master craftsman Shamsian, Bethan’s long term craft partner, the Inky Dhow Lustre side table top is made from laser cut pieces of hand dyed bird’s eye maple veneer, specifically chosen for the way the grain and finish intimates the varying depths of the painterly lines of Bethan’s original life-size Inky Dhow painting. Laid in different directions to capture and reflect the light, the pattern has been laid to flow seamlessly over the cabinet’s edges.
Inspiration:
Created entirely by hand during lockdown, Inky Dhow is Bethan's latest flowing brushstroke pattern. Using the intricate Shamsian marquetry, Bethan experimented with inks, calligraphy brushes & watercolour paper during those early lockdown days to create a pattern full of painterly life, depth & intrigue.

Bethan Gray
Bethan Gray has an extraordinary background: born to a Scottish father and Welsh mother, her maternal family descends from a nomadic Rajasthani clan that migrated across Arabia and Persia over centuries. Inspired by her heritage and fueled by a deep-seated curiosity about global art and culture, Bethan has travelled to many of the places they passed through, developing an innate sense for the geometric forms common to many of these regions. Today, her creative and technical expertise lies in bringing contemporary relevance to traditional techniques – keeping both cultural narratives and crafts skills alive. Working within equal partnerships that are built on mutual trust and respect is at the heart of Bethan Gray’s creative practice. By collaborating with master craftsmen and bringing contemporary relevance to their work, she is able to connect them to new commercial markets all over the world, celebrating and preserving their skills.
