Table for Spanish Desk, Rosewood, Wood, Wrought Iron, Spain, 18th Century

About the Item

Table for an Spanish writting desk (bargueño) with "Saint Anthony" legs. Although the curves of the guarantors and the discs may recall examples of the Baroque, the simple geometric decoration of the upper board, the absence of movement and the straight lines of the legs, of the typology known as "San Antonio" (which also Is in examples of the seventeenth century), make think of the eighteenth, already under the influence of Neoclassicism. Compare, for example, with the magnificent example of a dining table of Talleres Reales dated in the second third of this century and preserved in National Heritage. The usual thing is that this type of tables, made to hold desks, either of Spanish type, or Italian, had their boards smooth and without marquetry of any kind because with the furniture would hardly be seen and only the two guards in iron would remain in the front That this example has or, also, that they were dressed with rich fabrics to highlight the litters, leaving little more than the legs in sight. They were works made for high class houses as well as those desks, so only outstanding private collections and important museums preserved similar examples: one in the Sorolla (inventory 30023) of Madrid has board with plates in white resin pirograbada with mythological scenes, Another one of the seventeenth century in the National Museum of Decorative Arts (CE02068) with geometric motifs in marquetry, or another more similar to the present one in the Daroca Regional Museum (00038) but of contemporary date, made inspired by buffets like the present."
