On Monumentality: Burri en Tacubaya by Aldo Álvarez Tostado

About the Item

on their text Nine Points on Monumentality (1943), Fernand Léger, Josep Lluis Sert and Sigfried Gideon discuss the cultural and symbolic value of monuments and their crisis during the modern era, stating that a true monumentality is only possible if an unifying culture and conscience exist. the triptychs of this series abstract photos taken by foreign artists in Mexico, during the 20th century, free from the local nationalistic discourse. these images reveal the persistence of a massive, solid and ornamented architecture through the different eras in Mexico, whether it’s prehispanic, colonial or modern. the panels are composed with three varieties of basaltic stone, an iconic material in local culture and architecture. the compositions evoke different times of the day, and evidence the relation between volume and light, space and time in architecture.
