He solidified his position as a key figure in the Italian figurative painting movement known as Transavanguardia, a Neo-Expressionist movement that aimed to reintroduce color and representation in response to the Conceptual Art of the era. Chia's artworks graced the walls of numerous renowned museums and galleries worldwide, making appearances in pivotal exhibitions such as Zeitgeist in 1982. Over his illustrious four-decade career, he left his mark on prestigious events like the Biennale of Paris, San Paolo, and three iterations of the Venice Biennale. In his expressive canvases, Chia celebrates the sensuality, vitality, and the human connection with nature. Drawing from the wellsprings of art history, notably the Italian Renaissance and Futurism, he weaves narratives of eroticism, melancholy, and mortality, often adorned with historical allusions. Chia's central characters, larger-than-life heroic figures, exude an enigmatic sense of purpose, perhaps reflecting facets of his own identity. His paintings burst with dynamic brushstrokes and vibrant hues that infuse life into every inch of the canvas. In his recent works, one witnesses the culmination of 45 years of a masterful hand at work—a phase marked by artistic maturity. While his paintings still depict heroic figures set against lush landscapes, they now carry a more contemplative essence.
