Untitled Hand-Serigraph by Erté

About the Item

Untitled Hand-Signed Serigraph by Erté A fantastical hand-signed serigraph on paper by famed French-Russian artist Erté (1892-1990). This unusual piece embodies the spirit of Art Deco, with sleek geometric and stylized forms, rich colors, and glamorous details. The serigraph is edition 253/350, and was likely created in the 1980s. This piece is pencil-signed lower right and numbered lower left. The art work is complemented by a mat with black-edged geometric corners, and a glossy black beveled edge frame. Erté was a designer and sculptor from St. Petersburg, Russia. Erté is a pseudonym for Romain de Tirtoff, and is the French pronunciation of the artist’s initials, R.T. He was raised amidst Russia's social elite. At 19 years of age, he left St. Petersburg for Paris with the goal of becoming an artist. He hand-crafted original costume and fashion designs for many of the era's most renowned actresses, including Joan Crawford , Lillian Gish, Marion Davies, Anna Pavlova, Gish Marion Davies, Anna Pavlova, Norma Shearer, and others. Erté was most famous for his fashion designs and is often considered “The Father of Art Deco.” He was also a costume and set designer who worked on many famous films, including "Paris," "Ben Hur," and "Dance Madness." Throughout his lifetime, Erté designed over 240 covers for Harper's Bazaar. His most famous image is "Symphony in Black," a serigraph of a woman wearing black holding a black dog. Measurements are as follows: 26.5" wide x 31.5" high x .5" deep
